LLUK's Sector Skills Assessment survey is now available for employers to complete online at www.lluk.org/ssa.htm and is available in English and Welsh. The collection period for the 2010 SSA closes on Tuesday 31 August 2010.  This has been a major piece of work to develop and we have been working with employers, stakeholders and awarding organisations to get it right. It crosses the entire Lifelong Learning Sector but should drill down to specific skills gaps within Community Development.  Please promote it to your networks.

YHCDN - Our Manifesto for Community Development

Now the election is over and the new Coalition Government is in place, YHCDN is asking the Yorkshire and Humber MP’s to sign up to the principles of our proposal; the one which places community development at the heart of real empowerment for communities as part of the democratic process.

Community Development is a challenging, innovative and liberating process that seeks to involve and support individuals and communities to address their needs and fulfil their aspirations. Community Development can provide the building blocks for stronger civil society and engaged communities, and the practice of Community Development is integral to achieving all political parties' dreams of greater civic engagement, and active communities.

The Yorkshire and Humber Community Development Network is one of a number of regional CD networks in England. It started life as the Regional Advisory Group (RAG-CD in 2003) and changed its name to come in line with all the other regional networks in 2007.

The network exists to promote and support Community Development Practice and Learning in our region. We try to do this by:

  • Bringing practitioners together to share their experiences and learn from each other

  • Demonstrating the relevance of community development to government policies and regional objectives

  • Updating community development practitioners on new initiatives and key areas of work

  • Preparing case studies to demonstrate community developments contribution to community empowerment and engagement

  • Representing community development on regional and sub regional bodies

  • Commenting on consultation documents and regional and local strategic plans relating to community development

We are an informal network run by our members; we have no paid staff and seek to share our practice in different ways. We seek funding for specific events of interest to us (current and past events). We promote quality community development learning.

All members can share information with others in the network and shape what we do and how.

We hope to develop this new site with information from our members and we will be posting up new material from the other regions as well. Contact us to make suggestions and share your news.

Quality assuring community empowerment - request for research participants

CDF has commissioned a team of consultants to do some action research with communities to road test some models used to measure the quality of community empowerment.

The aim is to discover what works best from communities' perspectives so we are looking for a range of community groups who have been 'empowered' through being involved in partnerships or various schemes/programmes. The model will help them to examine their own experience of empowerment and identify where there is room for improvement. They should be willing to commit quite a bit of time over the summer to working with us to try out one model each and then feedback how they got on.

See the briefings by clicking here, they explain the project in more detail, but please feel free to contact Alison Gilchrist at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

If you know of any community-led organisations or groups who would be interested in contributing to this action research, please distribute the information in the flyer - see it here
