A Community Development practitioner from Hull DOC, was working with the Northern Network of Travelling People, a Traveller led organisation working across the North of England, its membership made up of VCS Workers briefed with working with Gypsies and Travellers and members of the Gypsy and Traveller community. They worked together to develop a training package which aimed to raise awareness among paid workers and other interested people on the culture and traditions of Gypsies and Travellers, which would consider the different issues faced by Travellers, and to allow the course to raise understanding of Transient Travellers.
The approach was to build the capacity of Northern Network of Travelling People by supporting members in the development of the course, to equip them with the skills to develop a training package, and to support the Travellers with the skills and confidence to deliver elements of the training course.
